CONTADOR MOR PALACE

The Palácio do Contador-Mor, as it is currently known, is a palace from the mid-19th century.

some elements characteristic of a palatial dwelling of this period (only identified in the rooms facing the main façade on the facing the main façade on the main floor, the main vestibule and along some compartments at the back).

The building's original morphology has changed considerably since it was occupied by two municipal schools and its general state of repair was degraded.

As this project is about a building with recognised heritage value, the promoter's aim was to adaptation/rehabilitation in order to guarantee the safeguarding of the existing architectural heritage for the enjoyment of future generations.

Refers to a residential building located in Largo do Contador-Mor, in Lisbon, in the Alfama neighbourhood, parish of Santa Maria Maior.

An intervention whose architectural language fully respects the heritage bequeathed by previous interventions.

This language is based on the restoration of the building as a whole, in an attempt to restore its magnitude, which adulterated by the damage caused by consecutive alterations and years of abandonment. However, the lack of habitable conditions and the lack of housing types led to a change in the morphology and distribution of the interior space.

It was proposed to divide the building into 6 single-family houses, giving it a new functional reality and returning to the "palatial" theme of living.

This relationship with the new reality is done while respecting and maintaining the façades, the height and the volume. The spatial dynamics thus adapts to a more plural programme of use, always with the awareness of reflecting in the architectural object the influence of the pre-existing.

Given the building's historical value, all the heritage elements catalogued by the Alfama Project Unit were kept.

The different types of appropriation are responsible for the morphological and functional diversity of daily life, seeking versatility in the use of spaces and enabling future users to better meet their programme needs
